I also found a painting done by Percy Gray of the Mission and thats probably how it look Percy Gray painting Percy Gray was born in San Francisco in 1869 and painted many scenes around Northern California. I believe he was a tonalist painter.

Cherries flirting with Green

9"X14" watercolor on 300lb cp paper. This painting over time evolved from a simple bowl of cherries with reflections. The cherries in crystal is from a photo on "idrawandpaint" for the Feb. watercolor challenge. I finished the challenge, but did not like the dark background in the photo. So...I painted New Gamboge into the background and the red in the cherries popped...Now, I had the focal point i.e.(Cherries) floating in a sea of yellow. So, add a table, that I did. Very light touch, because I already put the reflection in and moving the yellow paint across the painted red cherries without disturbing it. That done added a little burnt sienna and purple for the darks. Then for a last applause I threw in a green towel to complement the red...

11" x 14" watercolor underpainting with pastel on cp 300lb. Reference photo is from Gary Keimig "Wilderness Art Challenge." I masked off the flower and leaf shapes. I used Dr. PH. Martin's watercolor for the background. I poured blue charging the yellow paint with a little red into the blue.

I have a lot of fun doing study paintings of the masters. There is so much to learn in composition, color and perspective. Joseph Mallord William Turner was born in London, England, on April 23, 1775. His father was a barber. His mother died when he was very young. His style was impressionistic before impressionism was popular. "Flint Castle" he painted in 1838 and it was a watercolor. Turners print has more violets complementing the gold tones, he was a master at color. My violet turned green so I stuck with it and made a painting. I kept the man's shirt white and the horses for contrast. My actual painting has more yellow tones, but it did not photograph well.

I did this from my imagination. I've never painted cherries and it has been awhile since I painted a still life. My colors were Holbeins peacock blue and indian yellow with rose madder. I charged the shadows with a dark mauve and burnt sienna. Cherries always remind me of the spring when I picked them as a teenager for a local farmer. He would hire the neighborhood kids to finish off the pickings after the pickers left. We made $7.50 a lug and of course, I ate most of the profit, they were bing cherries, yum. What an overkill, you will not see me eating cherries today.....lol

This is a 9"x12" watercolor study of an aerial view of Yosemite in CA. The outcropping of trees on the rocks, I found difficult to keep in perspective. I tend to write large and paint large. Yosemite is truly one of the most marvelous sites in the United States. I have camped there many times and as a child ran all over those granite rocks and swam in the Merced river.

Multiple glazing... 18 glazes total on 140 lb cold press paper. This is a rendition of Van Gogh starry night series. I was not sure what to do with it. The paper started breaking down so I stopped with the glazes. I got this far, needs a lot more detail. I decided to put modern day people in just for change. I guess..... I am taking his composition and making it my own painting. I had a very bad reference print of the original. I used the grid method for drawing it on the wc paper, but I still struggled with the different angles. I had to stop correcting or make a muddy painting. WIP=\

My Adventures in Multiple Glazing

My adventures in multiple glazing technique have mixed results. These two painting came out really dark. The first one has 15 glazes and the second one 12. I can still finish them using acrylic or gouache, i.e. dark to light. LOL. The light areas are misket. I followed the recipe of eight colors (raw sienna, cerulean blue,burnt sienna,Sap green mixed with sepia, Primary red magenta, permanent violet bluish, primary yellow, garnet lake) these are the first initial colors, then it is whatever you desire. Each glaze is a gradient wash on 300lb hp paper. I think there is something to be said, regarding technique. I have not given up. I love the results of multiple glazing. I started 3 more paintings and this time I using three colors. This is all about technique,technique, technique.

El Capitan in Yosemite Park

Watercolor on 11" X 15" Fabrino 140 lbs CP paper. This is my first painting of Yosemite. I have camped there many times and the granite formations are truly spectacular. I tried to capture the spectacular:) The color tended to sit on top of the paper. This is the first using fabrino paper. I used a little white graphic on the background trees, the rest of the white is the paper. The Merced River flows in the foreground.

The painting values are more intense in real life. The photo for some reason fades the cobalt blue, that I used for shadows. Maybe, because it is an opaque paint it pull out the white. I went back in and covered the cobalt blue shadows with sepia.

I got a Catherine Anderson DVD and this is my first attempt at her multiple glazing technique. She uses MaimeriBlu watercolors paints on 300lb HP paper. I love painting on the paper, but I did not have all the colors in that brand, so I had to make due with Holbein and W/N. I love her work and this is really out of my comfort zone, since I like vibrant colors. I have 3 more in the works. Some paintings have 16 glazes total and all in different colors. The photo turn out more greyed down, it is more golden in real life.
